17 Mile Road goes around the Monterey Peninsula. We drove it to get from our Air Bn'b in Carmel Valley to our next stop in Monterey. We stopped at the Visitors Center at Pebble Beach.
I learnt Samuel Morse, a relative of the Morse who invented the Morse code, was asked to sell real estate 100 years ago where Pebble Beach is now. After not having much luck selling he had this 'ah ha' moment where he thought if there was a golf course in front, people would have a reason to buy. He took it to his higher powers in real estate and they agreed. That was the birth of Pebble Beach, so named because there is a small pebble beach somewhere along the peninsula.
The coastline of 444km is a national marine sanctuary formed in 1992. It supports one of the world's most diverse ecosystems and is home to whales, sea lions and seals (36 species of marine mammals, 525 species of fish, and not sure how many birds). It has rugged rocky shores, the largest underwater canyons and tranquil estuaries.
I think this is the pebble beach Pebble Beach is named after.
