Wednesday/Rāapa
We took the ferry to Rathlin Island. It is a nature reserve.
And we biked towards the West Lighthouse Seabird centre.
Sheep could tell we were from NZ.
Hillier than it looks.
Arriving at the Seabird Centre.
This is a colony on the cliffs, thousands of birds crowd the cliffs at this time of year, they jostle for prime positions to make their nests. Puffins dig their nesting burrows in earthy banks or use someone else's.
We saw kittiwakes . . .
. . . guillemots . . .
. . . and puffins. These guys look Disney-like, not for real.
At other times there are razorbills . . .
. . . and fulmars.
The marine life is as extensive as the birds. There are seals, dolphins, whales and basking sharks seen from the lighthouse. We didn't see any the day we went.
The lighthouse was interesting too - it's called the Upside Down lighthouse, because the light is at the bottom, not the top.
On the way back, I stood on the highest part of the island.
We then went to the pub for lunch, and back on the ferry to Ballycastle.
Then a further cycle around Ballycastle and the golf club.
Blog girl in action.
