Where is Bornholm? It is a Danish island 35mins flight south-east of Denmark, actually closer to Sweden than Denmark. Why Bornholm? It is called the sunshine island by Danes, and it is usually the warmest place in Denmark. "It is good for magical forests, medieval fortresses, great beaches, glorious food, and great cycling."
It is flat and 6 times the size of Waiheke, with a population of 40,000. We thought it looked a great place to explore for five days. This is Ronne, the biggest town, where we stayed.
We have a lazy first morning then go to a bike shop 5 minutes from where we are staying, hire bikes again, and go cycling.
We pick up a cycling map and take the blue route to Rø and Gudhjem.
Much of it is an old train track.
Bill setting a mean pace.
Me right behind.
Bill having a rest.
This dairy factory processes for the whole island.
Two cute cottages on someone's farm.
View from a cafe we stopped at to have pizza.
Gudhjem. (All the seaside towns have these man-made harbours which at some stage have been wiped out with storms and then rebuilt.) We stopped and had an ice cream here.
We head home back to Ronne. We went a slightly different route. Bill is the map man. I just enjoy, stay close in behind him, slip streaming and take photos for my blog.
One of four round churches on the island - this one in Klemensker.
A magical forest.
And back to have a swim in the pool, and an ice bath. Today we completed 40+km and the temperature was 25+ - with a breeze and in shade on the old railway tracks, it is very pleasant.
