We biked to Svaneke. We were mostly on the yellow track (see the previous day's map). Before heading off we did a quick tour of Ronne - the red house with the blue door is the smallest house on Bornholm.
The streets of Ronne.
On our way - the cycle tracks are marked really well.
Another magical forest.
We have a beautiful lunch in Svaneke, with Danish traditional smoked herring. Then to the ocean swimming pool with a diving board!
The light house beside it.
Another view of part of the pool.
The diving board in the background.
The camping ground which is right next door for families.
The harbour.
Another top restaurant, outdoors at the harbour.
This is the restaurant's street food stall, across the road.
Me in front of an old herring smoke house.
We head back to Ronne via Almindingen, a large forest. In the middle of Almindingen is a trotting track - really in the middle of nowhere. It is called Bornholms Brand Park and it is the smallest trotting track in the world - 580 meters around, which is about half a normal size track in New Zealand. And it is the most beautiful racetrack in northern Europe (locals say anyway) - it was certainly pretty.
This was a gem for sure. We lucked in - it was on our return route after Bill had seen there was a twilight meeting! (Reading those Danish newspapers has some uses.) In my reading up about it afterwards, I found that more than 25.000 people visit the racetrack each year. Races are from April to the end of October, and trotting is the national sport of Bornholm!
We had a chat about trotting in New Zealand with the men on the gate.
Then a walk around before the first race.
And they're off!
First race was won by a female driver on number 2.
Second race was won by a female driver on number 2.
Shall I have a bet? Surely number 2 with a female driver can't come in again. I backed another female driver, on number 9. One dollar equivalent each way. I like to have a bit of interest.
Oh no! Number 2 came in again - with a female driver! - and paid equivalent $17 to win! (Number 9 came 4th - and paid nothing.)
A shout out for female drivers though!
The racebook - Bill said the betting options are very similar to New Zealand.
So that was a bonus sporting event for the tour.
We biked 60+km today. Back to the hotel for an ice bath and spa. We have been having only two meals a day. Today we had three!
