Overnight we travelled further down the Macquarie coast to Lusitania Bay. Look at the east side of the map, towards the bottom.
Here we are in zodiac's, going from the ship.
A closer up. Today is a zodiac cruise only (no landing).
Fran and Mark.
Rowan.
The penguin colony at Lusitania Bay is the biggest we have seen, it is amazing.
A closer look.
There are maybe 250,000 King penguins here. They are counted using a drone photograph (but not individually).
A look at the colony and the surrounds. (The hills protect the colony from the wind.)
The remnants of the cauldrons used in the early 1900's for the penguins and sea lions - they would be boiled up and then their oil extracted, to be used for lighting, and as a lubricant. Terrible.
As we leave we see penguins in the water again. Beautiful.
