It is wet. It rained steadily through the night. We head up to the campsite to see how the youngies got on.
They had kept pretty dry in their tents happily. We pack up the very wet tents. We put on all our wet weather gear. Because I saw the weather was forecast for rain I purchased two ponchos at Oban Four Square. I put mine under my coat. Bill puts his on top. The youngies nickname him Big Bird.
This from the brochure, remembering we're going the opposite way.
We came across maybe a dozen people going the other way. Two said they had seen a kiwi cross the track. They do come out in the day down here, as nights are short and days are longer. Everybody also said there was mud. The lady in the visitor centre said don't go over it or around it, you're best to go through it. So we did - for maybe 30 minutes of it in the muddiest part.
A river with a bridge where we stopped for scroggin with chocolate.
By now Big Bird was getting a bit buggered (Ed.)
But Ranger Dan wasn't.
We stopped at two old log haulers at the top of the hill.
Finally we reached Port William hut. It had a been a much longer day than the first. There were more deer.
The sun comes out for a bit. It's another beautiful spot for the hut.
Lachie and I found some cell phone coverage.
Lachie and Chiara cook dinner again.
Dinner, and then another round of Up and Down the River. (Bill got in front of Robin on the very last round of the night, to win jointly with Lachie, Ed.)
We went kiwi spotting and heard them but did not see any again.
